It is imperative that you act quickly after an injury to collect as much data as possible, and to ensure that essential paperwork is filed on time. Failing to meet these deadlines can make later action much more difficult and expensive. The FECA Practice Guide contains a comprehensive set of checklists designed to keep your claim on track, and to ensure the employer is meeting their obligations.
Day 1:
- Traumatic Injury file ASAP
- Form CA1 must be filed within 30 Days to receive COP
- File 4 copies each (as applicable):
- CA 2, occupational injury
- CA 2a recurrence
- CA 5 death
- 1 copy each to:
- Employer
- OWCP
- Claimant
- Claimant Representative
- Employer must send CA 1 and CA 2 to OWCP within 10 days (20 CFR 10).
- Form CA 1: Check box for Continuation of Pay (COP)
- check if single event in single workday, even if injury is to same part of body as old injury.
- COP will not be paid if employee works part time or takes sick or annual leave for ANY days within the 45-calendar day limit for COP.
- Form CA 16:
- DOI – within four hours of notice of injury Supervisor MUST Issue Form CA‑16 that guarantees payment for medical expenses for 60 days.
- Optional for Forms CA-2 and 2a;
- Ensure Employee has initial choice of Physician.

Day 10
- Last day to provide medical report to employer for COP (Ch. 9)
- Send OWCP Letter Of Representation (Ch 5)
- Send Physician Letter re: Injury (Ch 12)
